Our Theory on Winter Whites

Our Theory on Winter Whites

We’ve all heard that it’s a faux pas to wear white after Labor Day — it’s basically fashion law. Marie Claire reported that this dates back to the turn of the century, after Labor Day became a federal holiday. Wealthy individuals would wear light, airy linens on their Summer vacations and return home to closets with darker colors and heavier fabrics for the Fall.

At Neutral Rebel, we instead subscribe to the theory that you can wear whatever you want at any time. Fashion is one way we express ourselves and we shouldn’t be confined by silly rules made up by some snobs in the 1800s. Plus, white is an effortless neutral color that should be appreciated all year round!

We were recently inspired by the Netflix series, The Watcher, which is mostly set in East Coast winter. Naomi Watts’ character, Nora Brannock, wears a lot of whites and creams, often in chic, monochromatic outfits. Watts’ wardrobe in this series solidified our belief that you can wear whites after Labor Day and make it “wintry.”

Winter brings darkness at 5 PM, cold temperatures, and cloudier days. We don’t need to mimic that by wearing black and grey every day, as people often do during Winter. We love the Nora Brannock look, or at least wearing a light-colored sweater with a dark pant, because it brightens our aura and lifts our mood.

When we researched specific pieces from Watts’ wardrobe, we found that one cashmere sweater could cost over… drumroll… $700! Yikes! Unfortunately, most of us don’t work on Hollywood sets with Hollywood budgets. So, we must defer to more affordable options. Enter: Neutral Rebel.

To achieve Nora Brannock’s style, aim for pieces in solid colors with a roomy, yet tailored fit. Remember: loose ≠ ill-fitting. Start with our Bundle Up Oversized Turtleneck Sweater or Campout Bishop Sleeve Cardigan, which are both buttery soft and super cozy. You can layer these over a pair of denim or faux leather leggings, as they’re long enough to cover your backside.

Polish off the look with a couple seasonal accessories, like our Lexie Belted Panama Hat, and some gold jewelry, like our Good Dreams Chain Link Necklace. These items will make you look put-together and fashion-forward without breaking the bank!

Even if you’re not a fan of the Winter Whites concept, we have plenty of styles in the other neutrals you love. You can shop those and more at our website here, and don’t forget to follow us on social @shopneutralrebel!
